Why would a journalist need to know how to plan, design and build a website?

A perfect example by New York Times, “Snow Fall at Tunnel Creek,” a multimedia story that covered the 2012 Tunnel Creek Avalanche that occurred on February 19, 2012 at about noon in the Tunnel Creek section of Stevens Pass, a mountain pass through the Cascade Mountains located at the border of King County and Chelan County, Washington. A large group of professional skiers had assembled to ski together and ultimately one or more caused the avalanche that killed injured five and killed three people. In December 2012, the New York Times published the interactive multimedia feature piece called “Snow Fall” and within weeks of launch, the site had more than 3.5 million page views.

New York Times Executive Editor, Jill Abramson, writes about the paper’s interactive feature, “At its peak, as many as 22,000 users visited Snow Fall at any given time,” she writes. “Strikingly, a quarter to a third of them were new visitors to nytimes.com.”

New visitors means new eyeballs driven to their website to view this storytelling that at the time was unique. Abramson adds, “Rarely have we been able to create a compelling destination outside the home page that was so engaging in such a short period of time on the Web.”

New York Times interactive piece went on to win the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing and remains a testament to storytelling outside the box.

Environmental

Environmental

Americans worry about the environment although many don’t fully understand environmental issues. Over time, environmental issues and the risks they present have become more complex. Therefore presenting information on these issues in a form that can be easily understood, verified and acted upon is critical.

As a journalist with vast environmental research and reporting, it takes time and lots of patience waiting for a FOIA request or return calls from EPA not to mention digging through piles of scientific data with keen insight to uncover inconsistencies. Covering environmental stories requires an understanding of both the “science” involved as well as the many complex environmental laws that govern these issues.

Experience writing about: Air Pollution (indoor/outdoor); Animal Waste Management; Biodiversity; Cancer and Other Disease Cluster Claims; Chemical Emergencies; Children’s Health (lead/asthma); Disposal of Dredged Materials; Endocrine Disrupters; Environmental Justice and Hazardous Waste; Genetically Modified Crops; Global Climate Change; Groundwater Pollution; Occupational Health; Pesticides; Pollution Prevention/Source Reduction; Population Growth; Sprawl and Environmental Health; Surface Water Quality; Water Supply

Project Management

Project Management

Project management is the process and activity of planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling resources, procedures and protocols to achieve specific goals in scientific or daily problems. Any successful journalist must work on multiple projects at once. This requires a mastery of software, organization and time management. In advertising and marketing we would set up pipelines that were constantly added and revised with a complete list of what we’re working on, what stage and the next steps towards a completed project.

In journalism, this experience has served me well to handle the complex nuances of several articles at varying stages of completion and further into distribution, bill and an unnecessary evil that plagues most freelancers, bill collection.

Education

Education

My education really started at home where my father delighted in teaching me the basic foundations that I use everyday with a creative mind. College will always pull me back for my addiction to knowledge is endless.

University of Georgia – Terry College of Business developed a solid foundation to tackle the corporate world of advertising, marketing and public relations.

San Francisco State University – Journalism and Film perfected my return to school. Although not too be redundant film study was mostly theory since journalism today gives you first hand experience with scriptwriting, shooting and editing video and distribution.

University of California – Los Angeles – Film masters will round off my education and upon completion, my goal will be to return my education to society by teaching others.

Journalist

Journalist

As a journalist, my reporting seeks out the new, the significant, the material that will inform my readers, viewers and listeners and present information in a suitable story form that satiates the public’s need to know with an ethic that directs and gives meaning to my work.

  • Multimedia storytelling skills. Producing slideshows with sound, shooting and editing video and photos, writing for the web.
  • Data and statistical skills for storytelling. Collecting, editing, analyzing and interpreting data to produce compelling interactive maps and graphics.
  • Audience development skills (formerly known as marketing and circulation) such as managing online communities, interpreting data on audience behavior, crowdsourcing for information, interacting with the audience.

  • The business of media. Journalists can help a news organization generate revenues without compromising their ethics, and today that skill is more important than ever.

Creative Arts and Design

Art is really my thing. As a child, hours were spent drawing cartoons and characters to accompany my stories. As an adult, this skill is put to use through illustrations or graphic design. Use creative ideas to improve the appearance and function of almost everything we see and use in our daily lives. Let me add flair to your story.

  • Design for websites, newspaper and magazine layouts, info graphics and illustrations to work on products ranging from cars to clothes and home appliances, to magazines. My designs are attractive, functional and, where possible, environmentally sustainable.
  • Artist able to draw, produce paintings, sculpture and other pieces that decorate homes, workplaces and public spaces.
  • Digital illustrator often working with the media profession, or another area such as advertising.
  • Photographer able to capture images for all sorts of purposes: art, weddings, commercial functions.

Web Design

Web design is often a skill that journalists must use to publish articles in an interactive platform.
